Refrigeration, including air conditioning, is necessary for life and will continue to expand worldwide. Its impact on environment is huge, even if refrigeration technologies can also be part of solutions for mitigating global warming (new sources of energy, heat pumps…). Many efforts have already been made. However, reduction in Global Carbon Dioxide Emissions and fluorinated gas emissions are challenges to be addressed on an on-going basis.
Though refrigeration is a necessary thing to mankind for all the vast reasons, it poses a threat to depleting the ozone layer or contribute to global warming and this is through the use of Halogenated hydrocarbons used as refrigerants. Refrigerants are liquids that change properties as a cooling agent for refrigerators and air conditioning units. One commonly known refrigerant used by both refrigerators and air conditioners equipment is R-22 most commonly known as Freon.
R-22 and certain other refrigerants, R-12, R-113, and R-114 to mention a few are not environmentally friendly that is, they contain chlorine atoms, which are responsible for the depletion of the Earth’s protective ozone layer in the stratosphere, causing a huge climate change which allows ultraviolet sunlight to reach the Earth’ surface, heating the planet and harming our skin.
With the scope of addressing these ozone depletion substances United Nations put on some laws and regulations with the agenda to reduce and phase out these harmful refrigerants to protect the earth’s environment. Refrigerant gas manufactures and all companies that are operating in refrigeration and air conditioner services are to abide to the rules and regulation so as to save mother earth through the use of environmental friendly low hydro chlorofluorocarbon compound such as the R410 A and R508 B refrigerants to mention a few which are said to be non- chlorofluoromethane (CFM) which makes them environmentally friendlier compared to most of the other refrigerants. The best thing with using these non CFM refrigerants is that even if it leaks and escapes your refrigerant, it doesn’t contribute to the depletion of the ozone layer. Ideally for example, R410 A was manufactured to replace R22, which proved to be a threat to the environment and due to serious international concerns on the environment.
As refrigerators or air conditioners owner it is as well edged to enquire harmless refrigerants whenever you need a refrigeration or an air conditioner service so as to increase the rate and stand a chance of making a good positive stand towards protecting our environment.
